When I was a kid, I had so many ideas! I spent hours designing and making cards for my family and friends. I created a wall-sized collage in my room. Bringing my ideas into reality was how I stayed happy. It still brings me a lot of joy.
Ideas run in my family. My dad was always making things in his woodshop. He made toys and furniture; remodeled a house; and built benches for National Parks. He was great at repurposing wood, seeing possibilities that others overlooked. He had innovative ideas including a technique to hide bolts used to hold wood pieces together which made his furniture more beautiful and comfortable.
However, like many people who create products and offer services, my dad didn’t know how to talk about his work or share it with others. I watched him become overwhelmed over and over again as he tried to develop a business.
Early in my career, I worked for other people which left me feeling stuck in a box with little opportunity to develop my ideas or creativity. I decided to break out of the box and develop my own business. Remembering my dad’s struggles, I was determined to learn from his experiences and succeed where he had not.
My first step was to establish an Etsy store and sell printable party supplies including content calendars, planning worksheets, party favors, and gift wrapping. This store, called “A Million Ideas”, now has over 3,300 sales with hundreds of positive reviews, and over 500 admirers.
As the store became successful, I was inspired to network with other women business owners. We talked about our businesses and I had so many ideas for how they could communicate about their products and services. When they followed through on these ideas, their businesses grew. I found the work I love!
Today I am a co-founder and owner of two networking groups: Elite Referral Network Nebraska and The Community LNK. These groups meet weekly to learn new business skills, share ideas for business success, and support each other through the ups and downs of being a business owner.
